Cassette Details

Here you go guys,… The Bad Boys from Long Beach on Wax! Pressed recently or back in the day, here is quite a bit (most in fact) of sublime’s music on Vinyl. Enjoy!

THE FIRST KNOWN SUBLIME “DEMO” CASSETTE!!! (The “Zepeda Demo” Tape)

This is the “Zepeda Demo Tape”. SUBLIME’S FIRST KNOWN-“Demo Tape”- circa 1988! It is called (or known as) the “Zepeda Demo” because Bradley gave it to Steve Zepeda who worked at places like Bogarts in H.B. & he eventually sold it on eBay. This is a “Demo” Tape which was used for booking the band in their early days at places like “The Nugget” on the campus of Cal State Long Beach! It was handmade by Bradley & has a hand-written cover which has the songs listed, along with a phone number for BRAD. The tape is dated 1988. The tracks are: EBENNZ CHANGE/ROMEO/DATE RAPE/NEW REALIZATION/THE BORING SONG. We all know most of these songs. Of course, “Ebennz Change” became “Ebin” & “The Boring Song” became “Roots of Creation”. Gotta love this piece. This cassette is mentioned in the liner notes of “Second Hand Smoke” & is essentially “priceless” at this point. Not to mention, the quality of the audio on this cassette is FLAWLESS. In fact, the songs even sound far better than the “released” versions on the “Living In A Boring Nation” Australian EP!

This cassette was obtained from Steve Zepeda out of Long Beach who Bradley gave it to & who booked the band in the early days! He even booked some of their very first shows!

The “c003” cassette – The Holy Grail

WHOA! Basically, there is ONE…. ONE! of these cassettes that I know of. That’s all I can say. I CAN NOT begin to tell you how RARE this cassette is…. When there is about to be a cassette pressed, there is a “Test Pressing” made… THIS IS IT!.. for the INFAMOUS “c003” cassette by sublime. The “c003” is sometimes referred to as the “First Cassette” or The “Green Tape”… Either way, here is it’s “Test Press”… The green labeled Original “OG” cassette will follow.

The “c003” (“TEST PRESSING”)-Grey Label Side Juan. I CAN NOT begin to tell you how RARE this cassette is…. This is the “Test Press” for the “c003” with the green labeled “OG” cassette to follow. Basically, there is ONE of these cassettes that I know of.

The “c003” (“TEST PRESSING”)-Grey Label back side. I CAN NOT begin to tell you how RARE this cassette is…. This is the “Test Press” for the “c003” with the green labeled “OG” cassette to follow. Basically, there is ONE of these cassettes that I know of.

Front cover of the “c003”

The “Jah Won’t Pay The Bills” cassette! (“Clear” Version)

This cassette is from 1991 and is the most “well-known” of sublime’s “demo” cassettes. There were two (2) versions of this cassette made. They are known in sublime circles as: The “Clear Jah” & the “Rasta Jah”…

The “Jah Won’t Pay The Bills” cassette! (“Rasta” Version)

This cassette is INCREDIBLY hard to find… some don’t even know that it exists. Well, it does & here it is in full glory! Said to have been 50 made, these are hand-made cassettes that were used for promotion. They were passed out at gigs & given to local record shops, etc. This is the “I never heard of THAT!” cassette, & in sublime circles, it is known as the “Rasta Jah”.

THE “Clear w/ White Label” FIRST PRESSING!

These particular cassettes are so RARE because not only are they the “First” Pressing, but sublime also mixed it up BIG TIME here! They included the “Extended”-“Thanx” on this release ONLY! AND,… AND!….On SOME of the cassettes, NOT all, they included “Trenchtown Rock” right after “KRS-One”!! As we know now, that track was not included on the “CD” pressing of “40 oz.” because of the current time constraints (circa 1992) on the CD format. Classic “sublime”. You will find this sort of thing all over the place when collecting sublime memorabilia because they always liked to throw little surprises & extras in there for people that were looking for them.  So,……… with ALL of the “First” pressing cassettes, you will hear the “Extended Thanx”, but ONLY ON SOME of these, you will also hear “Trenchtown Rock”!! **A good example of this is with the “Purple” version of this cassette. I have two of these-they are Identical- and one of them has “Trenchtown Rock”, and one of them DOES NOT have “Trenchtown Rock”!**  Sublime, soon after this, began making different colors or “versions” of this particular cassette. There were 3 “colored” versions with Silk-Screened labels right on the cassette (The “Clear”, The “Black”, & The “Purple”) & there were TWO “Labeled” versions; which was a CLEAR cassette with a WHITE paper stuck-on label & a BLACK cassette with a WHITE paper stuck-on label! These cassettes are about as RARE as they come & IF, IF you can find one,… you would look to pay upwards of $400.00 to purchase one of these . Just like sublime, amazing. They were truly a creative force; not just with their music, but also with their “self-promotion” & merchandise.

The “Black w/ White Label” First Press “40 oz. to Freedom” cassette!

The “Clear” First Press “40 oz. to Freedom” cassette!

This is the “OG”,.. this is the “Original”. This was the FIRST cassette made when sublime began pressing “40 oz. to Freedom” onto cassette format! The “Purple” First Press “40 oz. to Freedom” cassette!

This cassette is BEYOND RARE & was released in 1992. The 1st press cassettes came in a variety of different colors,… but the “Purple” one is by far the coolest & the hardest to find… These particular cassettes are so RARE because not only are they the “First” Pressing, but sublime also mixed it up BIG TIME here! They included the “Extended”-“Thanx” on this release ONLY! AND,… AND!….On SOME of the cassettes, NOT all, they included “Trenchtown Rock” right after “KRS-One”!! The “40 oz. to Freedom”- “SECOND” Press Cassette.

Still released on “Skunk Records” & containing ALL of the removed songs & samples that were deleted from future pressings, this is a “Second” pressing of the cassette version of “40 oz.”. While being very rare, it DOES include a “barcode” which allowed sublime to sell them in stores & it also gives an indication of such; meaning that there were far more pressed than the “First” pressing & therefore, they were more widely available. The other noticeable difference between this and a “First” pressing is the fact that it ONLY came in the “Clear with White Silk-Screen” version & not various colors & versions like the “First” pressings. Notice: The band members are still listed as : Texas, Cricket & The Yellow Lover on Drums. Also, notice the “New” address at the time of “203 Argonne”. The “First” pressing address was: “966 Redondo”. I will include a picture of BOTH versions to show you the very apparent difference. Still Amazingly RARE!!

The “Chiva Kenevil” cassette!!

This cassette is BY FAR the RAREST, most infamous & most sought after sublime collectible ever made. Made in 1993, this cassette was almost not even made because of the drug reference with “Chiva” & only a handful of “Original” ‘Chiva Kenevil’ cassettes were made. Said to be between 10-20 made, this is the most illusive piece of sublime memorabilia available. Other than the “Original” Chiva, there is the “Crossed Out” Chiva; which while having an Original cassette & artwork, the labels that were used are from the “STP Demo” tape & had the songs that were NOT on the “Chiva Kenevil” ‘crossed out’. These are also VERY rare, “OG”, & were made by the band but are nowhere near as RARE as the Original. ** This is also the release that contained the infamous track, “Drunk Drivin'” which for years was considered to be a “lost track” because it only appeared on this, impossible to find, cassette.

THE “SECRET TWEAKER PAD” (DEMO) OR “STP DEMO” CASSETTE TAPE!

This cassette is from 1993 and nearly impossible to find! Said to have been only 50 made! Self made by the guys & the first place to feature “Raleigh Theodore Sakers”

The “Raliegh Theodore Sakers” ORIGINAL cassette!!

This is IT guys! One of the most sought after & infamous cassettes EVER put out by “Skunk Records”. This cassette was made “as a joke” at the same time as the “Chiva Kenevil” release. There is said to have been 5 or 10 of these made. INCREDIBLY RARE!

THE “ROBBIN’ THE HOOD”/”13 FL. OZ.”-“TEST PRESS” CASSETTE! WOW!!!

This one is SO bad ass, I just HAD to put it up today. This thing is CRAZY. The reason I say that is because the cassette J-Card is labeled: “Robbin’ The Hood”; while the AUDIO that is on the actual cassette is the “13 fl. oz.” CD!!!!!! I have heard that prior to Brad coming up with the idea of adding all of the experimental stuff to “Robbin'” & the Raleigh stuff, the band was stumped on what to do as he was working on NEW material; like the acoustic stuff: “Mary”, Freeway Time”, etc. that is on “Robbin’ The Hood”. Basically, they didn’t have a “Full” album to put out there yet. If you look at the actual “Robbin’ The Hood” & take out the acoustic stuff & the Raleigh stuff & even some of the experimental stuff (“Waiting for Bud”), there’s not a lot there. So,…… The idea was to release a “compilation” of tracks from “40 oz. to Freedom” & the “New” stuff that they had completed, mastered, etc. & put them together until they had a whole album of “New” material to unleash on our asses…… And,………. to call it: “Robbin’ The Hood”. This is exactly why this “Promo” cassette exists & I have ONLY SEEN ONE OF THESE. As far as I can gather,…. this was a “test pressing” of some sort that was put together by Bud, Eric & Miguel while Brad was strung out off in his “STP” because the music wasn’t necessarily his “priority” at that point. I have heard that once Brad was shown this and notified of the “plan”, he said: “No, No, we’ll release this as a “Promo”, call it “13 fl. oz. Songs” & I will compile “Robbin’ The Hood” from the infamous 4 track stuff that he was doing on his own. So, here you have it folks,… what was GOING to be: “Robbin’ The Hood”,….. but became the: “13 fl. oz.” CD (as well as the “6 fl oz.” cassette.). Crazy huh? But, also, completely “sublime”…. You gotta love it…. Enjoy guys,… you probably will never see another one of these….. And all I can personally say is: BAD ASS.

The “6 fl. oz.” cassette!

This cassette is SO unknown that some don’t even believe that it exists & it is by far one of the RAREST sublime cassettes ever produced. The companion piece to sublime’s “13 fl. oz.” CD, there were only 200 of the “6 fl. oz.” cassettes made & each were hand numbered!

The “3 Ring Circus” Tour Promo ONLY Cassette!

This is from the “3 Ring Circus” tour that sublime did on the West Coast in 1995. Very limited pressing-Said to be between 50-100 made. Never sold,.. these were given out at tour stops along the way. The cassette was pressed with BOTH “Paper” labels (stick on) & silkscreen labels. Here are pictures of BOTH versions.  Sublime were Kings of their own promotion & this is just one example of how they got the word out ALL BY THEMSELVES! EXTREMELY hard to come by.

The “Self Titled” (White Label) Promo ONLY Cassette!!

This cassette was released MONTHS prior to Sublime’s “Self Titled” album to people in the music industry & friends of the band. These were NEVER SOLD. VERY hard to come by, these were promo ONLY cassettes released by Gasoline Alley/MCA. Very Rare.

The “International Only 6 Song Bonus CD” Promo Cassette

This cassette is very, VERY rare. A “Bonus CD” cassette!? Yup.. These were made for the European marketplace & were given out to record executives ONLY in Europe. Only a handful of these were produced to help keep sublime in mind once the “Self Titled” had been released through “give away” promotional cassettes such as this. Mostly given as a “Novelty” item, most did not even play this cassette… which means that they missed out on the “hidden” unreleased versions of most of the songs on this cassette! A real “Diamond in the Rough” right here…

The “1996 Skunk Sampler” Cassette

Released just months before Brad’s untimely death, This cassette is the one that allowed us to hear the NEW sublime stuff way before anyone else & the versions here are RAW!… This came out in 96’ to promote the upcoming stuff from Skunk bands; especially sublime who were about to go into the studio to record the “S/T” album. On the inside of the J-Card, it says: “*new album (May-June 1996)”.

The “1997 Skunk Sampler” Cassette!

This one is really rare guys. This is after Brad had passed so a lot of the motivation by Skunk (and Bud & Eric) to promote themselves had ceased. Therefore, very few of these were made for 1997 & most likely, not many of them still exist.

THE “1995 SKUNK SAMPLER” CASSETTE!

This is right before sublime hit the BIG time. These were made by the guys at Skunk to promote sublime & the other bands that were on the label at the time. These are VERY RARE at this point. The cassette features unreleased songs that were essentially unfinished or “rough” mixes that were not mastered yet by sublime. Also, the cassette came with a stick-on track listing that you were supposed to attach to the inside of the cassette case or onto the J-Card. You could buy these direct from Skunk for, if my memory serves me correctly, Two dollars!

The “KUCI-Ska Parade” (“Step On It”) Cassette!

Before “Destroy” came out, THIS compilation was the ONLY place to hear tracks from sublime’s show at KUCI on 3/5/94. Eventually, this came out on CD, but the cassette is the OG. These are hard to find and WAY out of print, so if you see one, grab it. All of the other tracks on here are great as well.

The “Misfits of Ska” Cassette (feat. “sublime”)!! [STILL SEALED!]

This cassette (released in 1995) was also accompanied by a CD version which came a little later, but this cassette features a very early appearance from sublime doing “Romeo”!!! As far as I know, The “Misfits Of Ska” Cassette & CD were sublime’s first “Official” appearance on a compilation! And, as we all know now, the song “Romeo” was one of sublime’s earliest songs dating back to 1988!!

The “Jacked Hempfest Info Kit” Cassette!

The “Jacked Hempfest Info Kit” was a “Promo Only” release from 1997 & there is No barcode on the cassette. It was released by “Radio Free Hawaii” & it was the first “official” release to contain Snoop Dogg’s version of the “Doin’ Time” Remix! There are interviews, music, Dub All Stars stuff, music from Hempfest & there is even a RARE, limited edition Sticker that only came with this cassette!! These are VERY RARE & VERY hard to find.

SUBLIME ORIGINAL DAT CASSETTE FROM THE PALACE SHOW!

This is the original Dat cassette from the Palace Show on 10/21/1995! This is the soundboard recording of that show and contains the infamous, illusive recording of “Ring the Alarm” at the end of the show. When you hear cds that contain this show, they don’t always come from a soundboard source directly from the booth where Miguel recorded it. Often, you will get cds that include 2nd or 3rd generation dubs of the audio. This results in lower levels, crackle, hiss, and other audio discrepancies. This Dat cassette is the OG and is amazingly clear, crisp, pure sublime at their peak. This Dat came directly from the band and is extremely rare.

THE AUSTRALIAN IMPORT “WHAT I GOT” CASSETTE!

This cassette is incredibly rare & extremely hard to find! If you see one, buy it. Plain and simple. This is the cassette version of the more often seen “What I Got” Australian cd single. The track list actually makes it sort of an “ep” because even though it contains two versions of “What I Got”, it also has “Saw Red” on it & it’s got the super hard to find ‘live’ version of “Jailhouse”. That particular version of “Jailhouse” is legendary & was taken from the Memories” cd. “Memories” was an audio recording of the show that took place at the Tressel Tavern in Everett, WA in November of 94′ & it is widely considered to be the best recorded live show by sublime.
